The Visa Process

Getting your non-immigrant visa

The visa process takes longer now than in previous years, but the steps remain essentially the same. In order to get a non-immigrant U.S. visa, you have to:

  • Obtain the appropriate application
  • Make an appointment with the U.S. embassy or consulate
  • Pay the application fee
  • Submit all required documentation

How do I know which application is right for me?
Although we explain the most common non-immigrant visas, U.S. policy can change quickly. Be sure to double-check the latest requirements on policies and determine which visa is right for you by going to www.UnitedStatesVisas.gov. If you have additional questions, your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate can also help.

How do I get the applications?
Applications can be downloaded at www.UnitedStatesVisa.gov. They can also be picked up in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

How soon should I make my application appointment?

In order to submit your documentation, you will likely need to make an appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Wait times are now longer than before, so make the appointment as soon as you know when you'll be traveling to the U.S. To schedule an appointment, you can phone, e-mail, mail or visit in person.

How much will this cost?
Fees vary with each visa. Be sure to ask the U.S. embassy or consulate what the fees are for your particular visa, as well as how they can be paid. Note: even if you cancel your trip before your visa is processed, these fees:

  • Are non-refundable
  • Must be paid before you arrive at your appointment

What do I bring to my appointment?
The visa process is very thorough. Although the consular officer might ask for more information, be sure to bring:

  • A valid passport
  • All the applications
  • Support documents - reason for travel, financial statements, proof of sponsorship
  • Payment receipts - you will need to prove you've paid the application fees

Once I've applied, how long will the visa take?
Most visas are issued in four to six weeks. If the officer requests additional reviews, it could take longer. Also, there is no guarantee they will issue a visa so be sure you have a back-up plan in place.
