Getting Help

Finding the information you need online at USCIS

Navigating your way through the U.S. government requirements can be confusing. If you have a simple question, you can simply call the USCIS's National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283.

My immigration question is complex. What should I do?
If you have a complex immigration issue and need to speak with someone in person, you don't necessarily have to consult a lawyer. You can book an appointment with an Immigration Information Officer through a free online service called InfoPass. The service is available at the USCIS website.

What do I bring?
When you go to your appointment, be sure to bring all relevant paperwork. This includes:

  • A printout of your confirmation
  • Identification such as a valid passport, drivers license, green card or work permit
  • All documents relating to your issue, such as receipts, official statements and letters

What if I need to reschedule?
You can reschedule using the identification number on your confirmation. There's no penalty or cost for rescheduling or cancelling an appointment. If you know you can't attend, be sure to cancel as soon as possible because other people need this service.

Where do I get immigration forms?
All immigration forms can be downloaded for free from the USCIS website. You can also call the National Customer Service Center (NCSC) at 1-800-375-5283 and ask them to mail a form to you.

How can I check the status of my case?
You can also check the status of your case online once you've filed it with the USCIS. On their website, look under “Hot Topics” and select “Case Status and Processing Dates.” Enter the receipt number of your case (three letters followed by 10 numbers - don't enter any spaces or dashes) and you'll know your status in a few seconds.

I misplaced my green card. Can I get a new one?
You can get a replacement using Form I-90: “Application for Replacement of Green Card.” You can do this online.

Employment authorizations can be renewed the same way using Form I-765.
