Visitor Medical Insurance
Getting health care while in the U.S.
Whether you're traveling to the U.S. for business or pleasure, you'll need to have medical coverage in case of an emergency while you're here. Car accidents, reactions to foreign food and sudden medical conditions don't take vacations, and any medical expenses you incur during your visit are your responsibility.
Do I need visitor medical insurance before I can buy airline tickets?
Some dishonest travel agents will try to pressure you into buying travel insurance by telling you that they can't sell you airline tickets to the U.S. unless you purchase travel insurance from a particular company first. Although medical insurance is a good idea, you can buy airline tickets - or any other form of transportation - to the U.S. without it.
Do I need visitor medical insurance?
Although visitor medical insurance isn't mandatory, it's a wise investment. Like luggage, a good map and proper clothing, insurance is essential to safe travel.
Also, medical treatment in the U.S. is very expensive. If you cannot prove you are able to pay, you may be refused treatment for non-life threatening injuries or illness.
Where should I purchase my medical insurance?
Unless your insurance carrier is internationally recognized, it's wise to purchase your insurance from a U.S. company. The premiums might be higher than what your national insurance company charges, but American insurance company cards are more widely recognized by American hospitals and doctors. It's also easier for them to verify the insurance or clarify issues if they are dealing with another U.S. company.
Also, if you're covered by overseas insurance, you might be asked to pay for the medical expenses up front and be forced to wait for reimbursement after you return home. It can take time for money to be wired from home, and some hospitals will refuse treatment until they have their fees covered. However, doctors and hospitals usually bill familiar American insurance companies directly and you will not have to pay for the treatment immediately.
When should I purchase the insurance?
Whether you purchase your insurance at home or from a U.S. company, don't purchase a policy until after you've confirmed your travel plans. Make sure you have all your important travel documents first, like passports, visas and airline tickets. To be safe, purchase coverage starting from the date you leave your country until a day after you arrive home. That way you are covered in case of flight delays.
